Retired Director Curt Struyk 2005-2009
Curtis Struyk, MD, OB/GYN. Curt began is barbershop career singing in a quartet when he was a senior in high school. He continued with the same three guys in college.
Curt got his first taste of directing a barbershop chorus as a freshman at the University of Northern Iowa when he directed the Twin-Town Chorus of Waterloo/Cedar Falls, Iowa.
During his 2-year stint in the U.S. Air Force, Curt was the assistant director of the Chorus in Manchester, New Hampshire. In 1972 Curt, wife Nancy, son Sam and Daughter Cindy came to Grand Rapids and he began his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He also became involved with the choir at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church and held the position of Choir Director for 20 years. It was time to get back into barbershop so he joined the Great Lakes Chorus and as they say, "The rest is History!"
Curt has sung lead in a quartet called Prizm and currently sing baritone in Wildcard. He has directed the Great Lakes Chorus for the past 4 years (since 2005) and the chorus recently (spring 2009) placed second at the District Contest in Traverse City.
Curt will be retiring from his practice at the end of June. He and his wife, Nancy will be spending July and August 2009 in Anchorage, Alaska and then spending the next year in New Zealand. web.me.com/cstruyk
